By my count, the PhoCusWright Conference in Phoenix last week utilized at least 49 different hashtags, but that by no means gave them a corner on the market.

There were several other major conferences held that covered Word of Mouth Marketing, Web 2.0, Twitter, Innovation, Mobile, European Startups and another travel industry tradition, the New York Hotel Show. Even COMDEX rose from the ashes as a virtual event.

With US Thanksgiving this week, it will be interesting to see if the focus shifts overseas, or if there might be a shortage of important hashtags next week. Please let me know if you see a great hashtag on the horizon.

Many thanks to WhatTheHashtag for archiving the tweets so those that missed the sessions live can still benefit from the content shared by the speakers and insights from the audience.

Some great presentations, quotes and links, but some of these conferences use multiple hashtags. Add a comment if you followed the conference under a different hashtag. I’ll be happy to set up WhatTheHashtag to archive the content as long as no more than 10 days have passed.

More people may be familiar with the saying “There’s an App for That,” but now I’m convinced that also, “There’s a Conference for That.”

What convinced me was the Business Failure Conference this past week at Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco.

Specializing in Start-up failures, it is great to see the formalization of the old saying – Learn from your mistakes.

A great benefit of Twitter is that it helps make the world a much smaller place. For example, while I was interviewing web development teams for a client in Dallas, I was also able to keep track of the happenings at a travel conference in Singapore and a search technology conference in Chicago.

It seems to me that I have now reached the point, in record time, where I ask myself, what was I doing before I had Twitter? It’s the same question I once asked about:

  • spreadsheets
  • faxes
  • laserdisks
  • e-mails
  • mp3 players

The fall conference season is in full swing and fortunately, for those unable to be in multiple locales simultaneously, live tweeting helps keep everyone informed of key topics of discussion.

The one interesting exception was Henry Harteveldt of Forrester Research who appeared to be physically attending the Amadeus Horizons conference in San Francisco, but was also virtually attending the Eye for Travel Distribution Summit in Chicago.

Henry’s live tweeting post rate would have been made court reporters envious, especially since he wound up cross-hashtagging his posts to keep up with both conferences.

Since even Henry couldn’t be everywhere, thanks to What the Hashtag?! transcripts of the discussions that mattered have been captured.

My recommendations for the top ten Twitter #hashtags covering travel, hotels, marketing, and technology for the week of October 11 – October 17, 2010 were:
