I was surprised as well. I didn’t include it in the blog post, but during the times of the Roman Highways, Innkeepers were incredibly important individuals who not only experts, but were also responsible for the safety and welfare of their guests. In many cases, it was a life or death issue. One great example was that there was no “walking” of guests when the inn was oversold. If a guest unexpectedly extended their stay, they could not be forcibly removed. The Innkeeper just had to improvise and figure out how to host the extra guests. – RKC
